Boring Wedding Play Lists

Boring Wedding Play Lists

I was reading an article on one of the online news services and they had a piece about making weddings original , fresh and vibrant. They had a full paragraph about music asking why do wedding play lists have to be so boring?

Mix up the music for crying out loud. Enough with the Kool & The Gang. Give the “Macarena” a rest. For my wedding, I want to boogie to ’80s songs with extended saxophone solos and/or high-pitched, whiskey-soaked male vocals. I want to dance to Huey Lewis and the News’ “I Want a New Drug.” I want to dance to “Girls, Girls, Girls” by Motley Crue. I want to dance to any Guns ‘n Roses song off “Appetite for Destruction.” I’ve waited my whole life for this day, so you better believe I’m gonna kick out the jams and play some serious air guitar in front of my loved ones. ”

Obviously the above paragraph was written by an American but the sentiment would be the same if written by someone from the UK it would just probably contain one or two other choices of song (you know us Brits tend to be a bit cooler when it comes to music!)

There is , without doubt , a clichéd vision of the typical wedding DJ  He (and it invariably is a man)  is someone who last had an eye on the charts when Duran Duran were cutting edge and he wouldn’t be able to tell you the current number one if his life depended upon it. He falls to the stock thirty or so mainstream party DJ songs in order to put together a night which takes no risks and drifts constantly into the world of cheese. Hotels often have mobile DJs   as part of their wedding package and many of these DJs have not played out in the real world for some time. It is easy to lose touch with the big new tunes when you are playing in a hotel week after week. Often the DJs who take these jobs tend to be the ones who  would struggle in a fast moving club environment.

So what’ the answer?

Well if your DJ has been given to you as part of the hotel package then meet with him , give him as many pointers as possible. Include a list of songs that you definitely want to be played. Make sure that you shape the night to your tastes.

Alternately hire a DJ from Live Music Management and we will provide a wedding dj who knows music inside and out and will be able to work to any brief without issues. If you have a particular style of music that you wish to be played we can make sure the DJ is someone who has previously done these nights in a commercial environment. Wedding play lists do not have to be boring!!!
